about

Barmer Boys, from Rajasthan, India, met up with the lads from Copenhagen-based Himmelrum at Honeyland, a D-I-Y festival held in August 2017 on a farm on an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea!

The surreal Bornholm island, with its castle ruins, magical skies and fields of giant wind-whipped grasses, and the Boys on a boat for the first time! - the perfect setting for camaraderie, chai and stellar performances by the bands at the festival, and a subsequent recording session in Copenhagen at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory.

This was the last track recorded at the sessions on the 29th of August, 2017, single-take, and features a short introductory alaap or ‘Nagma’ that flows into ‘Ranaji’, a Meera bhajan. A track that defies genres - melding gypsy, folk, jazz and rock - Manga’s powerful voice rising above atmospheric layers of guitar fuzz and the melodic drone of the harmonium, punctuated by soaring trumpet, shimmering cymbals and the acid twang of the morchang, with a bed of hard-driving percussion. 15 minutes of transcontinental bliss!
